Today we leave chapter two (did I hear someone say “Finally”?) for chapter three of Colossians. The first two thirds or so of this chapter is one quite involved thought on living the Christian life. Even though it is something of a seamless whole we will pull at the seams and take at least three weeks to work through it. Probably more. Good stuff there though, you’ll see.

I can't quite bear to leave Colossians 2 without one more look. Actually there are several things there that I think could be developed further but the one I can't leave behind is from the last verse. If these things are wrong, why do they have the appearance of wisdom? And, are they really no help at all? For anyone? Why not?

This week we get to where Paul becomes more specific about the errors seeking to take folks captive. As we read about them they sound rather tepid and tame, not worthy of Paul's strong language. But if we realize these supposedly helpful additions actually come between us and Jesus we will begin to see the real danger. They are not tame but deadly and over the next two weeks, Lord willing, we will see that they are very much still with us and as dangerous as ever.

This week we move forward just a few verses in Colossians and consider Paul’s rather perplexing but ultimately beautiful and powerful references to both circumcision and baptism. This particular passage is, I believe, frequently misunderstood and misapplied – let’s see if we can untangle it!

This week we finish up with the short but so powerful section of poetic and passionate praise for our Lord Jesus. Paul wraps it up by moving from the Cosmic Lordship to the Head of the Church to personal application. It is so very important to know the glory and authority of Christ, but then essential to ask the question from the Christian song of my youth (and probably many of yours also) “What Is That to Me?”

So having briefly, possibly too briefly, looked at Paul’s poetic picture of the cosmic magnificence of our Lord Jesus Christ we turn a corner to find more about our special relationship to him as believers. As we seek to unpack a few powerful words we should learn important things about the Church, about what we have to look forward to, and how we have any hope at all. It is a wonderful thing to gain insight into the glory of Christ, but then to learn this glory has personal application is truly and richly blessed.
