Continuing in 1 Samuel we find David and Saul in another verbal confrontation. This time after David steals Saul's ever present spear. It what may seem odd at first but this will lead us into some thoughts about Christian imagination.

Maybe I am a little cynical (maybe!? a little!?) but it seems to have become almost obligatory for new men coming into the presbytery to speak of themselves as "marrying up" or their wives taking pity or whatever. Perhaps it is sincere. Perhaps it is true. But, once I get to know both I rarely find myself thinking "what did she ever see in him?" But I have had those thoughts with others. Oh come on, you have too! We will together this week. We arrive at the section of the saga of David where he encounters a woman described as wise and beautiful who is married to a man essentially described as a world-class jerk. Trouble ensues. Lessons will be learned.

So we are getting back to the story of David and Saul after our Easter break. This week we find Saul wandering into a cave and David, who has become quite the caveman, urged to kill him. David makes a very significant decision and then makes a speech to Saul about it. Saul responds with a most interesting speech of his own. What may look like a text that warns us of missed opportunities is, at least in my view, really a text that warns us about short cuts. You can decide whether I'm right or you're wrong. "Take the Long Way Home."

We will of course be thinking of the Easter story, the bigger biblical story, and just how we fit our stories into that big picture. Lots of folks really like and even thrive on rules, we Reformed folk tend to like and thrive on doctrine, but God gave us stories. Ya know, like "In the beginning..." or "There was a man sent from God...". We need to think about why.

Communion Sunday! Always a great time to gather at the table of our Lord as family. Before we get there we will continue one more week with 1 Samuel. This week we see David heroic and yet hunted and betrayed. But the centerpiece is David encouraged. That should give us something to reflect on. How can we be encouraged, how can we encourage others, and how, ultimately, is Christ our encouragement? That should take us to the table nicely.

There are hard truths in the Bible, difficult stories. There are congregations, and not a few, that will not sing the moving and beautiful song Rick and his band led us in last week because they do not want to hear that "the Father turns his face away". Stuart Townend was asked to change that offensive lyric, so true and so soteriologically essential, and bravely refused. The passage we come to this week is one of those many would skip over. But it is important to the story we are following as Saul disintegrates and David, on the other hand, integrates faith and action. It is, for the most part, ugly. But it is the Word of God. So it is also both true and helpful.

So, back from a nice vacation and thinking March Madness is really about the weather. Been a challenging week after enjoying sun and upper 70's last week. Oh well. At least I am not on the run from a murderous maniac as David was from Saul. This week we look at several vignettes of his adventures and will probably wonder, as BTW he apparently didn't, where was God in all this. I think there are some surprising answers.

Last week we touched on the friendship of David and Jonathan. This week we look at that more closely as Saul becomes even more seriously homicidal toward David and he relies on the covenant promise, covenant faithfulness, and covenant love of Jonathan. Important implications and applications for us. We too have covenant relationships, the most important of which is with the Lord Jesus.

So now that David has defeated Goliath and is more and more clearly God's man on the scene, he quickly becomes the most loved and admired man in Israel. You know, he is that guy all the women want to marry, or marry their daughter off to, all the men want to be his best friend. But, ya know in this broken world there are always a few who resent, mistrust, and even hate someone like that. In the last chapter it was David's older brother. In the chapters we will look at this week it gets much, much worse because it is Saul, the king. In many ways the man David is doing the most good for! But deep down we all know how little that matters once dark things like fear, envy, and resentment start to stir. We will see both the terrible results of letting those dark things lose and the sovereignty of a Lord who is having none of it.
