War, death, grief, angry confrontations, the stuff of life. The stuff of the Old Testament where we are finally returning to finish our studies in 2 Samuel. Perhaps a brief review then we pick up where we left off with David out of Jerusalem and being pursued by his rebel son Absalom. We will see the troubled and confused king and the decisive and certain general Joab. Difficult but interesting and instructive stuff.

Tomorrow is 12th Night or, especially for the Christian calendar, Epiphany. It is celebrated as the revelation of Jesus as the Christ, the Messiah, the Savior and especially the visit of men from the East. To quote James Taylor, "Those magic men the Magi, some people call them wise, or Oriental, even kings, well anyway, those guys." So for the first Lord's Day of this new year we'll take a look at those guys.

Well I have heard everything from a bit of snow to the sky is falling in predictions for this weekend, so, should we meet on Sunday, we will be wrapping up the year with your prayer and praise requests. For my last sermon of 2017 I am planning on sharing some thoughts on kindness. The kindness of God in Christ and the kindness we as Christians should be known for. Nothing new, some review, but still I hope a gentle reminder we all could use.

Well here it is! The 4th Sunday of Advent is Christmas Eve this year. So we will be gathering for worship together both morning and evening. Our regular Lord's Day morning service where we'll contemplate both the first and the second Advent by thinking about Philippians 2 where that's pretty much what Paul does. In the evening we will sing the great Christmas hymns, light the candles, and think about the Incarnation. What it is, why it is important, and how we are to continue the work Jesus started until he comes again.

I know I said we wouldn't but I can't seem to find a way this week not to speak a bit about suffering, but also about hope. You might think oh more of the same but I'm not sure we ever stop suffering in this life or ever have enough hope. Advent is not simply about waiting but about longing and hoping.

Probably like you I sometimes get songs stuck in my head. Sometimes it's not a song but merely a phrase or a line. Sometimes that's not so good, for example too often Craig Finn's "Lord I'm discouraged" or "Excuses and half-truths and fortified wine" from the same song. Other times it's good, like early this week when I couldn't shake "Tidings of comfort and joy". So for the second Lord's Day of Advent we will focus on comfort; who needs it, who gets it, who gives it, and where it comes from. More properly who it comes from. The phrase is from a Christmas hymn after all and we are trying, really trying, to keep our focus on Jesus. The season can be so distracting don't we really, really need worship?

The first Sunday of Advent for 2017. Advent is typically described as a season of waiting and preparing for Christmas, the real Christmas, as in the celebration of the birth of Christ, not Santa, and Frosty, and the Peanuts gang. For our Advent we are going to touch on variations on the theme of "what are we waiting for?". For the first week we will look briefly again at this troubled world, try to make sense of a frequently misunderstood and misused Bible verse, and then see how Jesus is the answer we are looking for.

Well things should be back to normal this week. We continue following David in a chapter that doesn't have a lot directly about David in it. Interesting thing is that it doesn't seem to have a lot about God in it either. Except the author says it does. We'll be trying to figure that one out. Expect more comfort than conclusions though. Also a great week to pray together about Thanksgiving and the holiday season in general. Lots to be thankful for and yet some families precious to us will have empty seats and sad hearts this year. How we need to love and pray for one another!

This week we continue to follow David out of Jerusalem. Last week he met friends and showed faith in dealing with them. This week he meets enemies and shows faith in dealing with them. A lot to learn. For me anyway, hope for you too.
