We are continuing in Hebrews 11. I know we have slowed progress though Hebrews a lot but there is just so much great content packed into the chapter. This week three impossible situations that show nothing is impossible to God and the challenge and value of faith.

And we will roll right back into Hebrews 11 picking up where we left off with the little known figures of Amram and Jochebed and their better known son, Moses. Faith lessons from faithful folks in difficult times.

We move to one of the best known, and these days most reviled, stories in the Bible – God’s call to Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. I managed to avoid calling the sermon “Highway 61 Revisited” because I believe I see a larger and more important message in this and the several following verses. We’ll see what you think Sunday.

I can remember when Noah's Ark at Kennywood was a bit disorienting and rather frightening. But, if you read the story it is, albeit very loosely, based on in a fresh way you are certain to find that even more disorienting and frightening. The just wrath of God unleashed on a world deaf to the appeals of the "preacher of righteousness" he sent them. An old man called to build something no one had even heard of, much less seen, to save himself and his family from a disaster no one could imagine nor believe. Old Noah is next up in the line of faith. Then Abraham. Father Abraham!

Last week we began our studies in Hebrews 11, sometime called the "roll-call of faith" or other similar titles. We looked at several characteristics of faith and I may have gotten a few people fired up for a Shelly Pie with an illustration too near lunch time. Connie and I had a good ride from the Waterfront and then went up the hill to Mineo's, another favorite. Three days later City Paper declared Mineo's the best pizza in Pittsburgh. Coincidence? Don't think so!
Anyway, this week we look at the first two intriguing examples of faith in action and more characteristics of faith. Abel and Enoch are not the names that come quickest to mind for OT heroes of faith and yet here they are, leading the list.

Many are struck by what seems like a very sudden and unexpected change of tone and subject in the next few verses of Hebrews. The writer does move quickly from rather comforting encouragement to a quite stern warning. But, this is not the first warning and I think it follows quite well from the admonition not to stop meeting together "as is the habit of some". What could happen to those who fall away? The answer is frightening and serious and needs to be. We'll take a closer.

Last week we got started on the application section of Hebrews but didn't get too far. We saw there is a short but power-packed paragraph with four exhortations. We thought about the first two, "draw near" and "hold on". This week we will look at the next two. Thinking about stimulating or even provoking one another to love and good works and continuing to meet together. Important matters.
