Still in Hebrews 9, we continue the same themes but also see how added detail continues to build intensity and interest. A rather fascinating near play on words takes us from covenant to will, as in last will and testament. You can see the words are close in English, they are identical in Greek. That quickly moves to a discussion of the significance of the death and blood themes of the Old Covenant and how they are perfectly fulfilled in the New. Then an inspiring picture of the "already" and "not yet" promise of the Gospel.

We move into Hebrews 9 looking into and then away from the Tabernacle. Looking into what was should always have, and now must, raise our gaze to Jesus.

I was trying to decide whether to spend a little more time in Hebrews 8 or move on into chapter 9 while driving in [on] Tuesday. I had NPR on and the discussion I heard about forgiveness and the misunderstandings and mischaracterizations helped me to decide to address the matter of God’s forgiveness and ours this week. I know I have worked through this before but it is so critically important and especially as many in society feel so free to lecture Christians about our “obligation”. Let’s try to have some biblical clarity, eh?

We have seen that we have a High Priest who is better in every way than those who came before. Now we finish chapter 8 by seeing that he mediates a better Covenant also. We will need to think a bit about what a covenant is and how this one is better. And, of course, what that means for us.

Put away the Easter bonnets and don your finest sombrero for our Cinco de Mayo party this week. No, of course not. But we will be celebrating the Lord’s table, remembering a far more important victory than the Battle of Puebla! We will lead up to that by getting back to some parallels and differences between Jesus and that odd figure from Genesis, Melchizedek.

After the brief and blessed interruption of Palm Sunday and Easter, we are back to Hebrews this week. Moving back toward Jesus as our high priest and a priest after the order of Melchizedek. We start with Abraham, get to Jesus, and in a blaze of metaphors find an anchor.

Last week in dealing with a warning passage we pressed on to the very important affirmation of better things concerning them. This week we move into that section to see just why he was convinced of better things and the reality of their Christian faith. I think the answer is surprising and can easily be misleading. We will try to lead in a straight path without losing the excitement of a surprise.

I don’t really agree with the assessment of many that the next paragraph we will take up in Hebrews is among the most difficult, even vexing, passages in all of Scripture. I see their point and hope you will also, but equally hope we will see the warning for what it is and profit from it. I believe the most difficult aspect of dealing with such passages is the fact that those for whom it should be a warning and wake-up call doze through it while others, who are really in no danger, become terrified. We will try to find that healthy balance of afflicting the comfortable and comforting the afflicted!
